RIDGELAND, MS (WLBT) - The National Park Service will close an 8-mile section of the Natchez Trace Parkway between Ridgeland and Clinton Wednesday due to a major safety hazard.
The closure will affect the area between Interstate 55 and Highway 49 North and could last for more than a year, according to the National Park Service.
North and south bound traffic on the parkway will detour around the closed section using Interstate 220 – a change that the National Park Service says will add less than 10 minutes of travel time.
Over the past year, emergency repairs were done to fix instability in an embankment near milepost 94.8, which has the potential to collapse the roadway. The road has deteriorated to the point it is now unsafe for vehicular traffic, according to the park service.
One lane is expected to remain open on the parkway for bicycle traffic during the repairs.
