MADISON, MS (WLBT)- Drivers traveling through Madison can now go directly from I-55 to Highway 51. City and state officials gathered for a ribbon cutting to celebrate the official grand opening of the Madison Parkway.
The bridge which widened Highway 463 between I-55 and Highway 51 travels eastbound and westbound and contains four lanes.
It took about $27.5 million to complete the project. That expense included creating the bridge out of steel versus concrete, painting the bridge and adding unique strawberry imprints on the side. Madison Mayor Mary Hawkins-Butler said the cost was worth it.
"Absolutely, look at this community look at the growth we're having we call this economic development we don't just have to accept the status quo," said the Mayor.
Construction on the Madison Parkway took about two years.
