Madison County inmates learn to garden

MADISON COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) - The Madison County Sheriff's Department has recently introduced "Project Green Thumb" to inmates in the Trusty Program.

The program teaches inmates how to plant, take soil samples, take care of plants, how to prevent insects, how to sustain a successful garden and waht gardening consists of overall, according to the sheriff's department.

“This project is currently on a small scale, but we hope to expand it in the near future,” Major McNeal said. “It gives the inmates something to do with their time, and we hope to help them realize they are worth more when they get out than what initially got them here,” Major McNeal concluded.

The inmates are growing tomatoes, broccoli, radishes, lettuce, beans, onions, cantaloupe and watermelon.

Summer safety tips for ATV off-roading

The smaller models that start for ages six and up have added safety features like a wrist band that will signal for the motor to shut down if the rider falls off.

RIDGELAND, MS (Mississippi News Now)- School's almost out for summer but safety should stay the focus if your kids plan to hop on an ATV. A common issue is making sure the ATV isn't larger than the child can handle.

"Most of the adult ATVs are not for children under the age of 16," said Raymond Walters who is Sales Manager at Got Gear Motorsports in Ridgeland.

A warning label shows the age restrictions on every vehicle. And parents can't assume that just because their kid was OK on a larger four-wheeler before, that they always will be.
