MISSISSIPPI STATE – Planting the right trees in the best locations is a good investment that can also pay dividends in energy savings for home and business owners.

Bob Brzuszek, associate professor in Mississippi State University’s Department of Landscape Architecture, said planting trees that block the summer sun on the south and west sides of buildings and roofs can substantially reduce air-conditioning costs.

Like many home gardeners, I used to put plants in my landscape without worrying about labels because I was sure I’d remember what was planted where. And like most of you, I would end up scratching my head wondering what I had planted where.

One of the best gardening tips I can share, especially in the spring when you’re putting so many new things out, is to label your landscape plants.

PRVWSD requests input at community meeting

The Pearl River Valley Water Supply District needs feedback from the community to help prepare a comprehensive master plan for the district's properties.

The district has contracted with the Central Mississippi Planning and Development District to create the plan, according to a press release from the PRVWSD. The district plans to use the master plan as a guideline for future property use.

The PRVWSD is seeking input from the community on future growth and use of lands within the district at a community meeting Monday, May 13.

Mississippi has a long tradition of being famous for blues music. In fact, the Mississippi Blues Trail has markers all across the state telling the story of the blues.

Mississippi gardeners also have a long tradition of wanting blue flowers for their gardens and landscapes. Blue is a coveted color in the landscape, and plant and seed catalogs try every year to meet the need for the color blue.

With spring in the air and our landscapes waking up from their long winter’s nap, Mississippi gardeners jump into the many chores needed to get gardens off to the right start.

One of the first decisions to be made is what to plant. We flock to garden centers looking for inspiration and new plants to enjoy in the coming year. Sometimes we forget to look in our own gardens for the options we already have.

Madison clean-up day, prescription drug take back event Saturday
A clean-up day and prescription drug take back event is coming up Saturday in the Tulane University parking lot.

Recycling will be available from 10 a.m. to noon, and prescription drug drop off will be available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., according to the Madison Police Department Facebook.

Shred-It will also be on site for citizens and businesses to bring up to five small bags of paper to be shredded.
